When the U.S. Supreme Court released its opinion in
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Center in June of 2022, it not only overturned its previous landmark
Roe v. Wade decision, but it also changed the concerns and potential consequences for physicians all over the country who perform pregnancy terminations. In Alabama, a mere hours after the
Dobbs decision was handed down, a federal court injunction was lifted on the Human Life Protection Act, a law passed by the Legislature in 2019, making it the "law of the land" in Alabama when it comes to abortion. The speakers in this webinar will break down the component statutes in the Human Life Protection Act to inform learners what the law allows or restricts when it comes to abortion, answer common questions about the new law, and provide some risk management suggestions to avoid violations of the law. This activity will enable our learners to close their professional practice gaps in terms of being able to practice in compliance with significant changes in recently passed landmark legislation concerning abortion services.
CME ObjectivesAfter completing this activity, learners will be able to:- Determine which pregnancy terminations are restricted and which are permitted under the law, as well as which are not considered abortions and are therefore, not regulated by the law.
- Develop strategies for confirmation and documentation of determinations of serious health risks, as abortions permitted under the law.
- Recognize that the Human Life Protection Act provides criminal penalties that are separate and apart from medical professional liability actions and their potential civil penalties.
