Description:
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are rapidly being integrated into clinical practice, influencing diagnostic, therapeutic, and documentation processes. However, physicians lack clear understanding of the legal risks associated with AI use, including professional liability exposure, documentation standards, informed consent considerations, and the potential impact on the evolving standard of care. As regulatory and judicial frameworks continue to develop, uncertainty persists regarding physician responsibility when AI tools inform clinical decision-making. This educational activity addresses a gap in physician knowledge and competence by providing legal insight and practical risk mitigation strategies to support the safe, ethical, and defensible integration of AI into patient care.

CME Objectives:
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
  • Describe the current legal and regulatory considerations related to the use of artificial intelligence in clinical practice.
  • Explain how AI integration may influence physician liability and the evolving standard of care.
  • Apply practical risk mitigation strategies, including documentation and oversight practices, when incorporating AI tools into patient care.
