This course, presented by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, addresses the basics of Cannabis and Cannabinoids, the therapeutic implementation of Cannabinoids, the risks, myths, and characteristics that make Cannabinoids different than conventional medication, and the relevant laws and rules that govern physicians who intend to certify patient eligibility for medical cannabis in Alabama.  

CME Objectives
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:
  • Discuss relevant state rules and regulations governing medical cannabis in Alabama.
  • Recognize the legal restrictions and parameters that physicians must observe with certifying patients as eligible for medical cannabis in Alabama.
  • Describe the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in mammalian systems.
  • Identify various phytocannabinoids and the state of the data on each.
  • Recognize the utility of cannabinoids in treating a range of adult and pediatric illnesses.
  • Cite the role of routes of delivery and when each would be medically appropriate.
  • Acknowledge the risks associated with cannabinoid use and place them in accurate context.
  • Separate fact from fiction: Recognize the role of lore and the ways in which it is misused by industry.
  • Describe the ways in which recreational cannabis use and systems interplay with medical.

Competencies:
This activity addresses the following Desirable Physician Attributes: Provide Patient-Centered Care, Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, and Employ Evidence-Based Practice.

Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians in all specialties who wish to become a registered certifying physician to issue a physician certification for a patient to use medical cannabis.
